World Cup 2022 LIVE: England vs Wales preview as Cristiano Ronaldo denied another record in Portugal win

The big day is finally here!

England take on Wales on Tuesday for a place in the last 16 of the World Cup. Gareth Southgate's side will progress if they avoid a 4-0 defeat to their neighbours.

Rob Page's team face a more daunting task to keep their hopes alive. If they beat England - by any score-line - and Iran's game against the USA ends in a draw, they will go through. If Iran or the United States win, Wales will need beat England by four goals.

The US need to beat Iran to leapfrog them and snatch the final spot. In Group A, the Netherlands need to avoid a heavy defeat against eliminated hosts Qatar to progress, while there's a shootout between Ecuador and Senegal in the other game.

Wales need "mother of all results"

Mickey Thomas says Wales need “the mother of all results” if they are to beat England and prolong their World Cup journey.

Wales must win against England on Tuesday night and hope Iran and the USA draw if their 64-year-wait to grace a World Cup is to extend beyond the group stage. Former Wales star Thomas believes the World Cup will be Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey’s final outings for their country and he wants the pair to go out on a high.

"It’s going to have to be the mother of all results, because Wales haven’t shown anything so far in the first two games," said Thomas. "But if I say I think Wales are going to win, people will probably say I should be put in a straitjacket!"

World Cup pitch invader

The incident occurred minutes before Portugal took a 1-0 lead through Bruno Fernandes. The man holding the pride flag was also wearing a t-shirt which read 'Save Ukraine' on the front and on the back read 'Respect For Iranian Women'.
