An investigation into the murder began after a woman was attacked on the street early this morning.
A 36-year-old woman suffered a serious head injury in a "horrible assault" in Ilford, eastern London.
She was walking along Cranbrook Road towards Ganzhill Station when attacked.
A woman who has not yet been officially identified died in the hospital this morning after she was found injured early in the morning.
Arrests have not yet taken place and the crime scene remains.
The Metropolitan Police Department said the Metropolitan Police Department was called to the scene by the London Emergency Service at 2:44 am.
Assistant Commissioner Stuart Bell said: "Our investigation is still in an important early stage and is now led by a murder investigator in the Specialist Crime Directorate.

'Sunday morning emergency From early on, urgent investigations have been conducted to identify women.
"No formal identification has been done at this time, but the female family is informed and supported by specially trained officers.
"A team of dedicated officers is working at a pace to see what happened and identify the person responsible.
" This is for the scene and its surroundings. Includes a complete forensic investigation, home-to-home inquiries, and a focus on identifying all available CCTVs.
"Locals today and in the coming days Over time, you will see the presence of important police in the area.
'I understand that this is a very tragic event for women, especially locally. We encourage you to be vigilant, but you don't have to be vigilant. The investigation states:
"We are between 2am and 3am on Sunday morning. I would like to contact everyone who was in the Cranbrook Road area of Ilford.
'I also saw something suspicious overnight in a larger area of Ilford. I would also like to get in touch with people.'
