Tory Conor Burns loses whip and government job over 'serious misconduct' claims

A Trade Minister has been sacked from government and lost the Tory whip after a complaint of "serious misconduct".

The Whips’ Office is investigating Conor Burns over allegations, the details of which are not known, which date to the party conference in Birmingham earlier this week.

Mr Burns told The Sun “he will fully cooperate with the investigation and looks forward to clearing his name.”

A Whips' Office spokesman said: “We have suspended the Whip pending investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour earlier this week.

“We take all such allegations extremely seriously. The Prime Minister has been clear that the highest standards in public life must be upheld.”

A No10 spokeswoman said: “Following a complaint of serious misconduct, the Prime Minister has asked Conor Burns MP to leave the government with immediate effect.

“The Prime Minister took direct action on being informed of this allegation and is clear that all ministers should maintain the high standards of behaviour – as the public rightly expects.”

The Mirror has attempted to contact Mr Burns - whose appointment was cleared by the Cabinet Office propriety and ethics team - for comment.

The 50-year-old MP for Bournemouth West since 2010 was a minister for most of Boris Johnson's premiership and fiercely loyal to the former PM. He infamously claimed Mr Johnson was "ambushed with a cake" during lockdown parties in Downing Street.

However, he was also given a job in Liz Truss's government, being moved sideways from the Northern Ireland Office to the Department for International Trade in her first reshuffle.

The allegation is the latest in a string of reported incidents that have plagued the Tory Party in recent months.

Deputy chief whip Chris Pincher was stripped of the whip in June after it was claimed he groped two men in a club.

And Neil Parish stood down after it emerged he had watched porn in the House of Commons - although he later said he stumbled on the page by accident while looking for tractors.

Separately, an unnamed Tory MP is on bail accused of rape as the Metropolitan Police carries out an investigation.
