School gym teacher loses leg in 'accident' in garden during storm

A physical education teacher had to have his leg amputated after being crushed against a garden wall in an accident.

31-year-old Lauren Her Cooper lost her limbs when Storm Her Eunice hit England in February 2022, causing injury and destruction.

She explained that she was watching television safely in her house while the wind howled and raised her voice when she heard a loud noise.

``As if It sounded like a car crash, but it was louder,' she recalled. I didn't even go outside at that point, I was literally sitting there watching TV.

" So I thought, 'What if someone got hurt?' So I went outside and saw that most of the walls had fallen down, and I [thought] who to call?

"Some of the neighbors came out and we discussed the situation. One of the neighbors came back to put his shoes on." A wall hit Cooper, crushing her leg. Had she been closer, the accident could have been even more serious, as her walls were taller than hers.

Her neighbor returned to find Cooper lying on the floor. It landed on my feet, which may sound very strange, but I literally felt nothing.

"I was looking at my feet.

One of Cooper's neighbors took her to Lister Hospital's A&E Department, where she was was transferred to Addenbrook Hospital in Cambridge, where she underwent three major surgeries over the course of several weeks.

Doctors tried to save her leg, but the circulation in some of her toes failed. It was completely cut off and the initial decision to amputate was made.

"When discussing amputation of toes, the first thing that came to mind was how to wear sandals. That was it,' she recalled.

But it soon became clear that more drastic action was needed.

Now Lauren is going through an intense physiotherapy treatment, but is keeping up a positive attitude

Cooper said:

"Maybe it was my worst day in the hospital."

Cooper, who is currently undergoing physical therapy and says he "gets frustrated every single day," but his family With the support of her physiotherapist, Matt, she is slowly adjusting to her new life.

She is also getting back to basics in her favorite sport, netball, after she can walk without crutches.

"If you have a situation within your control that seems like something is making you unhappy, I think you should do something about it.

"So I have no control over this situation. I can't change the fact that I lost my leg, but how do I deal with it?"
