Radio news anchor bludgeoned to death with hammer as woman and two kids injured

A man has been charged after a radio news broadcaster was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in a brutal attack that also left a woman and her two children injured.

Jim Matthews, who presented overnight news at WWJ-AM, was found dead at a home in Chesterfield Township, northeast of Detroit.

Chesterfield Township Police Department reported that the incident on September 23 left one person was dead and four others, including the suspect Arthur Williamson, 55, injured. The police described it as a domestic situation, reports CBS News.

Jim's heartbroken brother Joe Nicolai paid tribute describing him as "just an amazing, genuine guy."

Police were first called at around midday on the Friday after a 35-year-old woman and a girl, later identified as Matthews' girlfriend and their five-year-old daughter, were seen running from the home.

Police found Matthews' body inside and their 10-year-old son tied up in a closet with a head injury.

The suspect was found in the basement with self-inflicted wounds and was overdosing.

Matthews' girlfriend was stabbed multiple times and is in a stable condition in hospital.

The couple was treated at a hospital and later released. Their son was found tied up in a closet inside the home with trauma to his head and is in a critical condition in hospital.

Williamson has been charged with murder, assault with intent to murder and unlawful imprisonment charges but has pleaded not guilty.

The suspect's relationship with the victims was not immediately clear, authorities said.

He had been invited into the home "sometime in the middle of the night," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido told reporters Monday.

Joe Nicolai also thanked those who have reached out to his family.

He said: "It is absolutely amazing and wonderful how many people have reached out.

"I never knew that my brother had touched so many people and touched so many lives in positive ways."
