Michael Purcell dies at 28: Rugby league mourns death of Australian star dubbed 'kangaroo catcher' in car crash

Rugby league star Michael Purcell has died at the age of 28.

The Australian star, known as 'Kangaroo Catcher', died Sunday morning in a car crash.

Purcell is a versatile winger and fullback who has made a name for himself as a star player in Queensland rugby league.

The speedster, nicknamed for his seemingly keeping pace with the kangaroos, has played for clubs such as Ipswich his Jets and Brisbane his Tigers.

In a total of 82 games, Purcell scored 68 tries and he scored 22 goals.

Star then signed with NRL giants Melbourne last year when he signed with the Storm.

And he recently played for the Tigers in his Super Cup for Intrast.

Tributes flooded in from Australian rugby league people, with the Tigers tweeting:

"My thoughts and prayers go out to Percy's family, friends, Tigers, Blimba Bulldogs, Brothers, Ipswich Jets and those who played with him in the wider rugby league community."
