Boris Johnson resigned as prime minister and Conservative leader after ministers and lawmakers revealed that he could not support his position.
Johnsonis set to stay in that position until his successor is deployed. His successor will attend theToriesmeeting in October.
According to No. 10 sources, Johnson spoke to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of theConservative 1922 Commission,to inform him of his decision.

Who is responsible for the leadership contest?
The 1922 Committee, a powerful backbench committee chaired by Sir Graham Brady, is ultimately responsible for setting the rules for the Conservative Leadership Contest.
Leadership elections will only take place if a conservative leader resigns or loses a vote of trust between MPs.
Johnson talked to Tory 1922 Committee ChairmanSir Graham Bradyand agreed to resign, so a leadership contest to replace him as Tory leader It would be held.
Meanwhile, he remains the caretaker's prime minister. The

Who can vote?
Both Tories and Conservatives play a decisive role in the election of the next leader.

How does the process work?
If there are multiple candidates, the leadership contest is usually held in two stages.
The Executive Committee of the 1922 Committee, together with the headquarters of theConservative Party, will determine the rules and procedures for conducting the contest.
These rules and schedules were published by the Chair of the 1922 Committee.
In the first stage, a series of ballots will be used to reduce the number of candidates.
If necessary, multiple votes will eliminate the candidate with the least votes and re-vote the MP until only two candidates remain.
For example, in the 2019 Leadership Contest to replaceTheresa May, where Boris Johnson was elected leader, the first vote resulted in 10 candidates, Johnson and Jeremy. Only the hunt was left.
What happens then?
At this stage, the two remaining members face a conservative vote.
This means that party members give their views on the leaders of the Conservative Party and the next prime minister.
Once again, the schedule for such polls, with members from all over the country, will be decided by the 1922 Commission executives.
Can Boris Johnson stand?
It is unlikely. Under the rules, resigned leaders are usually not eligible to challenge subsequent leadership elections.
