Drivers warned of common Autumn problem as leaves build up under car bonnets

Motorists have been warned not to allow leaves to gather under car bonnets during autumn months as it can have serious consequences.

As colder weather sets in, drivers have to make sure that their vehicles are well prepared for the harsher conditions, reported the Daily Record.

This week there have been yellow warnings from the Met Office for strong winds and heavy rain and the blustery conditions are set to carry on for the coming days.

While it may be a bit early in the year still to carry spades in cars in case of getting stuck in snow, there are clever hacks that people can use for their cars to keep them running smoothly in autumn.

Scrapers and de-icer are fairly obvious for drivers who are looking to clear their windscreens that may have frozen up.

Searches on social media by enthusiasts looking for hacks to keep their cars in top condition have become popular.

And automotive experts at Peter Vardy have taken a look at car maintenance-related hashtags on TikTok to reveal their top autumn and winter car hacks that many people wouldn't be aware about.

The importance of removing dead leaves that gather under vehicle bonnets is not so commonly known for car maintenance.

While they can lead to dirt building up on the car they can also interfere with the drainage systems.

Cars are designed so that water doesn't gather and this is through a drainage system which can become blocked if there are a build up of leaves.

This means that there is a greater chance of rust building up and in colder months this could turn to ice so people may not be able to open their bonnets.

Another point to keep in mind all year round is to ensure car tyres are pumped up to the correct level, especially at the moment during the cost of living crisis, as driving with tyres that have a low pressure means that more petrol is being used.
