The daughter of an elderly woman whose beloved garden gnomes were stolen from her east Hull home has branded the two culprits caught on CCTV as "disgusting".

Kim Wharton said the incident in Bessingby Grove was one of a spate of recent garden ornament thefts in the neighbourhood, with one woman's bird bath even having been taken.

But she said the 'moon gazer' statue and other ornaments stolen from her 80-year-old mum were of particular sentimental value, having been bought for her by family members for birthdays and Mother's Day.

"I think it's disgusting stealing other people's property," she said.

"And what for? They won't get much for them.

"No one has a right to take anyone else's belongings, no matter how small or big a price tag they have on them. My mam had the moon gazer for a long time, he's very unusual and you don't really see many of them."

The men had targeted her mum's home over the weekend of January 25 and 26, she said, returning over two nights and targeting multiple homes in the area.

"Two youths were seen on my mam's security camera reaching over her fence and taking a few garden ornaments which were in reaching distance at around midnight," she said.

"Then on the next night at around 8pm they came back and one kept a look out while the other one picks up a small kneeling Buddha ornament, then tries to pick up the moon gazer which, to their surprise, was a lot heavier, so he had to come back for that.

"A few gardens down there was some garden ornaments stolen that night and another woman noticed her bird bath had been stolen.

"Further round they stole some more out of a man's garden, even though his were glued down."

Despite her mum's upset, she said they had not contacted the police and had conceded that they would likely never see the ornaments again.
