A woman has been taken to hospital after her car was crushed under the back of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

Morotway police and North West Ambulance Service personnel were rushed to the M58 this afternoon (April 13) after the crash at around 2.50pm.

The crash saw the front end of sky blue Peugeot car completely crushed under the rear of a HGV close to junction one for Kirkby.

It happened on the approach to Switch Island.

A number of road closures had to be put in place for an air ambulance to land at the scene, the Liverpool Echo reports.

After this, the driver of the Peugeot was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

Merseyside Police said she had suffered injuries to her face but that thankfully they were not believed to be life threatening.

A police spokesperson said the driver of the lorry, a man, was uninjured and remained at the scene to assist with police enquiries.

Photos released by the Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit showed the aftermath of the crash.

In the photos, the bonnet of the Peugeot can be seen crushed underneath the lorry and car parts are scattered across the road.

The Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "We've been dealing with this RTC at Switch Island from the M58.

"We're very pleased to report the driver will be ok and is stable in hospital with relatively minor.

"The road will be reopen soon, we're just clearing the scene now.

"Thank you to everyone who stopped to help."
