Manchester United have the chance to exorcise some lingering bad memories when they take on Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The two sides met in the final of the Europa League last season, with the Red Devils falling short in a mammoth penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes. United 'keeper David De Gea was left dejected, as he was unable to stop any effort from the La Liga side and then missed the decisive penalty.

While that evening in Gdansk will have left scars on the Red Devils, they also have some more recent problems to overcome.

The 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday was their third defeat in four matches. One of those losses came last time out in the Champions League, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's side were stunned by Young Boys.

That defeat means anything other than a win in this encounter would leave United fans a little concerned about qualification for the knockout stages, not to mention the lack of momentum early a campaign that promised so much.

However, the Reds will still be big favourites at Old Trafford, with the supporters surely set to relish being back under the lights for a European night.

Team news for Manchester United vs Villarreal

United may have to reshuffle their defensive options, as Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire hobbled out of Saturday's clash with Villa with injuries.

It means Alex Telles may be drafted in at left-back, while Victor Lindelof is the most likely candidate to replace Maguire if he doesn't recover in time.

Marcus Rashford is back in training, but unlikely to be available for selection until after the international break. Nevertheless, Solskjaer has a plethora of attacking talent to choose from and it'll be intriguing to see if Jadon Sancho features after being left on the bench at the weekend.

Villarreal have a number of key players missing in attack, including star striker Gerard Moreno and exciting winger Samuel Chukwueze. Former Arsenal man Francis Coquelin is suspended.
