He wrote: "I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer.

"Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone."

The film had already been pushed back once as the cast and crew set about fine-tuning some complex flight scenes.

It had been intended for release on July 12 last year but was pushed back to July 17, 2020.

Deadline reported at the time it was to “allow the production to work out all the complex flight sequences so that the pic can be great”.

The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski who has worked on Oblivion and Tron:Legacy.

The latest trailer opened with Cruise – who has reprised his role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell - skimming over snow-capped mountains.

He gets summoned back to train the latest batch of Top Gun graduates for a special mission - and he looks to have lost none of his recklessness.

Among those he's mentoring is Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: Rooster, the son of Maverick’s late friend Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka Goose.

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

In the 1986 film, Maverick flew a Grumman F-14 Tomcat but climbs into the cockpit of a new fighter in this film, which made its debut in the trailer.

The fighter – a F/A-18F Super Hornet, boasts increased agility and speed.

But fans are even more excited by a mysterious 'space plane' which appears in the final seconds of the trailer, before Tom is seen wearing a helmet closer to an astronauts than his usual uniform.

Val Kilmer has reprised his role as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in the sequel, which also stars Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell.
