Stormzy has branded Britain a "racist country" and accused Boris Johnson of making it worse.

The grime superstar, 26, has been a vocal opponent of Johnson and the Conservatives and declared it was a "dark day for minorities" on the night of the party's historic general election victory.

Now he's opened up about his fears for the country in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

When asked if he thinks Britain is racist, he said: "Definitely, 100%. It's like: 'Oh no, we're not racist'. But there's a lot of racism in the country.

"The difficult thing with the UK is, as you said, in Italy it's a clear problem, whereas trying to explain that Britain is a racist country [to a British person] is the most difficult thing ever.

He accused Boris Johnson of 'encouraging hate'

Stormzy went on to accuse the Prime Minister of "encouraging hate" with his sickening remarks about Muslim women looking like "letter boxes".

The musician went on, adding: "If the top person can openly say this racist thing - the 'piccaninnies' remarks, 'watermelon smiles', comparing Muslim women to a letter box.

"If that is our figurehead, the top man, the leader we have to follow, and he openly says these things, he encourages hate among others."

On the night of the general election earlier this month, Stormzy retweeted a message penned by journalist Mehdi Hasan shortly after the exit poll result was revealed.

The message he shared with his 1.3 million followers, that made reference to Johnson, read: "Dark day for minorities in the UK.

"Especially for British Muslims who watched as a man who said 'Islam was the problem', mocked veiled Muslim women, & also turned a blind eye to massive anti-Muslim hatred in his party, was just given a landslide majority by their fellow Britons."
