'Stop your blah-blah-blah' Macron's top ally Beaune shamed as he denies UK vaccine success

Vaccine: France 'did not block distribution' claims Beaune

The French EU Affairs Minister told France2TV the idea Brexit Britain was ahead on vaccinations compared to countries in the EU was not true. Mr Beaune argued that despite the UK vaccinating almost 18 million people with a first shot of the vaccine, it was lagging behind the EU in terms of full vaccinations.

He said: "It is said that 25 percent of the British population has been vaccinated, this is not correct.

"When we look at the number of people who have a full vaccination, i.e. two doses, the United Kingdom is behind many countries in the EU."

One viewer wrote: "Substantial protection for 18 million people (with a booster to follow) is better than boosted protection for 2 million people and none for anybody else.

France, as well as the rest of the EU, is lagging behind Britain on vaccinations after the European Commission engaged in a bitter contractual row with vaccine provider AstraZeneca.

The pharmaceutical giant told the EU it would cut vaccine deliveries to the 27-member bloc by 60 percent in the first quarter due to production problems.

On Tuesday, an EU official told Reuters the company expected to deliver less than half of the doses it was contracted to supply to the bloc in the second quarter.

In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has accelerated the UK's vaccine rollout, aiming to give all adults a first dose by the end of July.

Britain has the fifth-highest number of COVID-19 deaths globally, at over 120,000, and has reported more than 4 million cases.

It has given nearly 18 million people a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, around a third of its adult population.
