A sick pervert amassed a haul of more than 373,000 images of child abuse over two decades before being snared by cops.

Leslie Rutherford spent 21 years trawling for depraved photos of youngsters being sexually abused from his home near Edinburgh.

Cyber crime analysts managed to recover and catalogue hundreds of thousands of images accessed by the 66-year-old.

Rutherford appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Friday and admitted possessing child abuse images between March 11 1999 and September 7 last year.

Fiscal depute Anna Chisholm said police swooped on Rutherford’s home in Newbridge and various devices were seized.

Ms Chisholm said 464 of the images found were at Category A - the worst level - while 511 were Category C and 372,148 were Category C.

Rutherford was put on the sex offenders register.

The court heard Rutherford also had 180 Category A videos, 53 videos at Category B, and another 511 at Category C.

Ms Chisholm said the Crown was making a motion to seize the devices.

Sheriff Nigel Ross deferred sentence on Rutherford until next month for reports and placed him on the sex offenders register.

The sheriff granted forfeiture of the devices.
