Odessa Carey “screamed hysterically” for her mum at night from inside her prison cell.

The 36-year-old cut off her mum’s head before carrying it around Ashington in a shopping bag.

Experts believe her 73-year-old mum - who shared her name - was bludgeoned in bed with a mallet before her daughter used knives and scissors to behead her.

Too unwell to stand trial, Carey was detained in a hospital after a Newcastle Crown Court jury ruled she had carried out the disturbing act.

However prior to the trial of facts, Carey had been remanded in HMP Low Newton.

Now according to one former inmate, Carey spooked other inmates at the Durham jail as rumours of her actions spread.

“She just screamed ‘mum’, while other times she would be laughing or singing,” claimed the woman, who was serving a sentence for assault.

“She creeped me out but you sort of couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.

“She was in a cell with nothing in it, there was only a TV behind a plastic screen in the wall and a bed. The door was see-through and she was under 24 hour watch.

“She walked past (with two prison officers) while I was in the waiting bit and she just turned and laughed at us - it was creepy.”

The grisly act occurred last April 8. However it wasn’t until the trial in March this year that gruesome rumours about what had unfolded were laid to rest - or confirmed.

The head had been carried around in a bag for days. At one point, Carey removed it and kissed it in front of shocked allotment owner John Murray.

She had suffered a schizophrenic episode at the time, having stopped taking medication. Almost a year on, a court heard she didn’t believe that it was even her mum's body.

According to her former prison mate, who asked not to be named, Carey would scream for her mum.

"You had to walk past her cell window to go to gym where I worked. And now and then she would be screaming for her mum hysterically,” she said.

“She didn’t mix with anyone, she was obviously very poorly. Everyone knew what she did although the rumour around the jail was that she had tried to sell the head as a joint of meat.

“Most people were a bit creeped out by her but the general feeling was that we felt sorry for her.

“She should have been in a hospital sooner.”

Northumbria Police eventually found Carey hiding in a loft, with the force later releasing a clip of the moment she was discovered by armed cops.

When police searched the property in Morpeth Close, Guide Post, they found her mum's head under the sink.

Following the trial of facts, the family claimed they had been let down by services.

"Our mam was a loving, caring woman who would help anyone that needed it," they said in a statement.

"She also loved to talk to anybody she met. She was taken from us too soon and had a lot more to give.

"Sadly she was taken from us in a horrific and vicious attack by our younger sister, who had suffered mental health issues for many years.

"We believe that the mental health system failed us and vast improvements need to be made."
