Sex Education arrived with a bang when it debuted on Netflix in 2019 and it quickly became a big hit around the world.

Now it's back for a third series, after a long wait due to the pandemic, with the new season streaming from September 17.

A lot of the conversation around the series centres on where it is set — and many of the locations might look very familiar. Mostly all of the show is filmed in Wales. Around the Wye Valley, Newport, Penarth and for series, three, in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

The show centres on teenager Otis (Asa Butterfield) who lives with his sex therapist mother, Joan, played by The X Files star Gillian Anderson. The awkward teen starts to gain status amongst his peers when he realises he can dispense advice to help their sex lives.

Series one ended with a lot of sexiness and a few of sad moments, too , while there were some more big revelations, secrets and a soggy camping trip in series two as well, but we won't give up any spoilers.

Although a British show, there has been much discussion about Sex Education's Americanised high school appearance and confusion over when the show is set — it looks 1980s but the characters have smartphones.

The soundtrack features Welsh singer, Gwenno, whose track Tir Ha Mor, played in episode one, and brass band collective, Year of the Dog, whose members come from Cardiff and Monmouthshire, pop up as the school band in the show.

Peaches, Duran Duran and tonnes more also feature alongside the action in series three.

Here are some of the locations featured in Sex Education you may recognise., with season three locations added at the top.

Rhondda Bowl

Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindell and Mimi Keene in Episode 3 of Sex Education Season 3

A retro-looking bowling alley in Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taff, was used for some scenes of the gang in episode three of series three.

Rhondda Bowl is still open and locals visit for a game in the old-school surrounds, which were made extra kitsch for Sex Education.

The owners loved the decor so much they told the designers to leave the alley as it is, other than removing the signs and branding.

You can find out more about the alley, here.

Penarth Seafront

Aimee Lou Wood as Aimee Gibbs and Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley

Sex Education has already featured locations in Penarth, see below, but this series it shows off the seafront in the seaside town.

The prom and pier appear in episode seven when pals, Maeve and Aimee stroll along.

It's not the first time that Penarth has appeared on screen, most recently it was seen in the Sky Original film, Six Minutes to Midnight with Judi Dench and Eddie Izzard.

Wintour's Leap

Though a stone's throw from Chepstow, impressive walking spot, Wintour's Leap is just over the border in England. But we've put it top as it's a new location and looks so flipping good on screen.

It's where Jackson and Cal hang out over looking the valley, from the top of the cliff.

It's lush, right?

Margam Park

In series two it seems that the Sex Education team have made Margam Park look even more lush than it is in reality.

We see Adam performing his regimen at military school, which uses the neo-Gothic Margam Castle as a backdrop. In the episodes, Adam is boarding at the school after being sent there by his father.

Llandogo

Two miles north of Tintern, Monouthshire village Llandogo (Llaneuddogwy is its full Welsh name) is on the River Wye and you can also walk to Offa's Dyke from the village, which has a pub, a church and a village hall. It can be seen in the show as cutaway shots from the main action.

Browns Village Stores

The family shop in Llandogo has been open since 1928. Maeve goes in during episode two, series one to buy something and in series two it's where Adam & Ola worked.

Tintern Old Railway Bridge

Otis and his friend Eric cycle across this bridge on their way to school in series one.

It's an old tramway bridge that was built for the Tintern Wireworks factory in the 1880s.

University of South Wales' Caerleon campus

The Caerleon campus controversially closed its doors in 2016, following a merger of the University of Wales, Newport, and the University of Glamorgan to create the University of South Wales. But it's now the on-screen double for Moorland High School, where Otis, Eric and the students on Sex Education attend.

Director in production and performance at the University of South Wales (USW), Tom Ware, said the faculty of creative industries worked extensively with production company Eleven Films to make Sex Education during 2018.

He added that a number of paid work experience opportunities were offered to students over the course of the summer.

The Sex Education gang are back at the campus in series two and for the third instalment.

Paget Rooms, Penarth

The Penarth venue was bustling with action in May of 2018 as the Netflix crew rolled into town for a few scenes for the first series.

The historic theatre doubled for the school's main hall and is a Grade II listed building that is owned by the Penarth Town Council.

It's back for series two as Jean visits Moorland to give a sex talk... awkward and the end of the year show, of course. And in series three, new head of Moordale, Mrs Haddon (Girls' Jemima Kirke) is taking the assemblies now, too.

And on the outskirts of Wales... Symond's Yat

And if you were wondering where Jean and Otis' stunning hillside home is, it's not in Wales, but it's a canoe paddle down the Wye at Symond's Yat.

The stunning Norwegian-style chalet is nestled in the side of the valley overlooking the River Wye.

Sterrett's Caravan Park, Ross-on-Wye

Sex Education captures this borders caravan park in the most gorgrous way.

It's where Maeve lives, as well as Isaac and his brother and Cynthia and Jeff.

Sex Education series 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
