Newcastle held out with just 10 men for most of the first half against Norwich, but will need to dig deep in the second period.

After a positive start, the Magpies were dealt a huge blow when Ciaran Clark was shown a straight red card after bringing down Teemu Pukki when through on goal.

Joelinton went close with an effort from the edge of the box, but Jamal Lewis had to be alert to deny Sargent at the far post.

Joe Willock then set up Callum Wilson after a driving run, with the stand-in Magpies captain firing over on the turn.

Here's how Lee Ryder has rated the Newcastle players so far.

Martin Dubravka 7

Calm and assured and he's had to be after nightmare start. Has faced five efforts and saved well from Gilmour.

Javier Manquillo 6

Has offered some presence on the right but left to recalculate after Clark dismissal.

Ciaran Clark (1)

A rookie error from the experienced defender. This was a needless move as Pukki still had a lot to do.

Whoever made that rule up may have spared him a low mark although a 1/10 may have been appropriate had this occurred a few minutes later the cut off point.

Fabian Schar 6

Has overcome injury early in the match.

Jamal Lewis 7

One important clearance near the line denied Sargant.

Ryan Fraser

Not on long enough to get a mark. Just three touches.

Jonjo Shelvey 7

Started off with another scorching effort. Then forced to drop deeper after red card. Has done well at both ends.

Joe Willock 5

For some reason, it's just not happening for Willock. He just can't get into the game.

Allan Saint-Maximin 6

A couple of bursts forward. Shackled with defensive duties for the 10 men.

Joelinton 7

Making a good first of things. Has had two efforts at goal both over.

Callum Wilson 6

On a night in which he might have hoped for chances galore has been left to scrap and battle in near isolation at times.

Federico Fernandez (for Fraser 10)
