Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand has labelled incoming signing Raphael Varane as a 'class act' and compared him to another Reds legend in Rio Ferdinand.

Varane will complete a move to Old Trafford next week after a deal worth an initial £34.2m was agreed with Real Madrid to bring the World Cup winner to the Premier League, following 10 years at the Bernabeu in Spain.

With United fans delighted about his imminent arrival, 1968 European Cup winner Crerand has had his say on the transfer and believes that the Frenchman will be a terrific signing.

Speaking to Manchester United's official club website, Crerand said: "He's a class act. He played in the 2018 World Cup for France and stood out. He's a totally class act.

"I don't think there are many top central defenders anywhere. He reminds of Rio Ferdinand actually — that's how good he is.

"He's excellent with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look easy, exactly the same as Rio. That's because they're terrific players. They make things look easy. They can read the game well.

"I think he'll be a great signing for United," Paddy enthused, "and at a great age as well; he's been there and done it."

Varane has won four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, a Copa Del Rey and four FIFA World Club Cups as well as the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018, where he was a stand-out performer and was named in the team of the tournament.

After flying to Manchester, Varane will have to undergo a quarantine period before undergoing a medical and signing his new four-year contract at Old Trafford. He could make his debut in the pre-season friendly against Everton on August 7th before the Premier League opener against Leeds United on August 14th.
