McDonald's fans in the North East are expected to line up in order to get their first burger in more than two months.

Drivers joined a lengthy queue to get their hands on their favourite fast food treats at the Metrocentre on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, branches at Stanley and Team Valley are due to open - with more traffic expected.

Cars had been queuing back to the A1 after the Metrocentre drive-thru opened causing some traffic disruption.

Police not expected to be involved

Northumbria Police say it is not expecting to get involved in managing traffic queues around McDonald's branches.

Instead it will be McDonald's staff who will be responsible for keeping the lines in order.

Officers would only be called out if there were reports of "disorder" breaking out.

Hundreds queued up yesterday

Hundreds of fast food fanatics descended on the Metrocentre on Tuesday as Tyneside's first McDonald's reopened its drive-thru for the first time in weeks.

Footage captured by ChronicleLive shows hundreds of vehicles forming snaking queues in car parks while others are lining the streets with traffic reportedly backed up as far as the A1.

It was of 168 of the fast food restaurants to open from 11am on Tuesday, with hungry drivers desperate to get their favourites since lockdown began in March.
