A closed police station in Home Secretary Priti Patel’s constituency is now a NURSERY.

The former cop shop in Witham, Essex – sold for around £875,000 – offers massages and yoga for under-fours.

Frustrated locals must travel if they want to see an officer. To report non-urgent crime they are urged to ring 101 or use a 10-step online form.

Half of all UK stations – some 667 – have closed under the Tories since 2010.

They have been replaced by flats or businesses including nurseries, a McDonald’s, Lidl store and a pub.

Two have even been occupied by cannabis-growing crooks.

Ms Patel has vowed to give police “funding, powers and resources... so people can live free from fear of crime”.

But locals are unimpressed.

Crimes since the police station closed include two knife attacks, a shop burglary and a masked heist.

Mum Hannah Hearne, 40, was in Holland & Barrett and saw one raid in February.

She said: “Two guys came in with masks and hoods up and emptied the shelves. There was no one there to stop them.”

Retired secretary Joy Lane, 77, said of the Witham closure in 2016: “It’s terrible. The nearest station is in Braintree and that is too far.”

London’s Met has sold off 106 bases for £1billion.

Since 2010, Scotland Yard has introduced “contact points” in libraries, cafes, POs and a Waitrose car park.

Cannabis plants were found at one old station in Winchmore Hill, North East London.

It sold for £950,000 in 2015 to be converted into flats.

In Failsworth, Gtr Manchester, cannabis plants worth £1.5million were found on the first floor of the old station which closed in 2013 and sold for £190,000 three years later.

The former cop shop in Northallerton, North Yorks, will soon become a pub with 32 rooms, while Park Lane in Salford, Gtr Manchester, is now the Kids Planet nursery.

Sidcup – the South East London constituency of Security Minister James Brokenshire – has seen its station turned into a Prezzo diner.

In Wendover, Bucks, the station was turned into nine flats, including a £425,000 penthouse, while locals were told they could see a bobby in a quiet corner of the local library.

Labour’s shadow police minister Sarah Jones is furious.

She said: “This shows the financial pressure the police have been put under. Criminals have never had it so good.”

Former cop Norman Brennan said: “Policing has become the fire brigade – one emergency to the next. The public don’t see them.”

In 2019, PM Boris Johnson pledged 20,000 new officers – but that only made up for the number cut since 2010.

Sources say Essex Police get £15.3million more this year and Witham station was sold before Ms Patel was Home Secretary.

The Home Office said: “Police stations don’t catch criminals, police officers do.”
