A primary school was forced to shut within hours of reopening after two pupils tested positive for coronavirus.

St Paul’s Church of England Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, closed its doors again on Monday after two siblings tested positive with Covid-19. Parents of pupils have been advised to self-isolate if they or their own children came in contact with the pair.

In a letter written on Wednesday, headteacher Cath Palmer told parents the two pupils had fully recovered. She said: ‘I can confirm that, following the advice of Public Health England, I have contacted the parents of children currently attending the school to alert them to the fact that two relatives who have been attending the school have tested positive for COVID-19. We have followed all the correct procedures advised by Public Health England.’

The school is remaining closed this week while a deep clean is carried out, however children of key workers are still able to attend. According to Mrs Palmer St Paul’s will begin a phased reopening to the rest of the students on June 15.

The headteacher said the school is open to vulnerable children and those of keyworkers as it has been for the past 11 weeks. In a bid to reassure parents, she added: ‘We understand that these are concerning times for everyone but please be assured that we have worked very closely with Public Health England to ensure that all procedures have been followed; we have been guided by them throughout this period.’

Local councillor Ralph Berry told YorkshireLive: ‘This tells us that we are not through this crisis and that we need to be really listening to the Director of Public Heath in Bradford (Sarah Muckle).

‘We need to continue to observe social distancing and be very careful. The Government message has been very confusing.’

Under the Government’s plans to gradually ease lockdown measures, reception, Year One and Year Six pupils returned to school on Monday.

Some secondary school pupils will follow on June 15, with Years 10 and 12 given the opportunity to have some contact with their teachers, as they are preparing for exams in the next academic year.
