Police are searching for a man from Penicuik who failed to return home.

Ewan Thomson, 40, w as last seen on Newmills Road at 11pm on a night out in Dalkeith on Friday.

He was planning to take the number 49 Lothian bus from Dalkeith to Rosewell and was going to walk the rest of the distance home to Penicuik.

It is believed he could have taken the cycle route from Rosewell to Penicuik.

He is described as 5 ft 9 in height, slim build, clean shaven with mousy brown hair.

He was believed to be wearing a grey wool style jacket, blue jeans and blue trainers.

Constable Tracy Mcshane said: "Ewan has been missing for a number of hours now and his family and friends are understandably worried. I would ask anyone who has seen Ewan or a man matching his description to contact police as a matter of urgency.

"There will be an increased police presence in the Rosewell and Penicuik areas as we carry out our enquiries assisted by Mountain Rescue and Police Scotland's Dog Unit.

"I would also ask if residents in these areas could check any garages, sheds or outbuildings they have in case Ewan may have sought refuge there. We appreciate the public's help with our enquiries but please do not put yourself in danger by searching open areas such as fields for Ewan. We are carrying out enquiries and searches in these areas with the assistance of specialist officers and a search dog."
