A French pensioner accused of raping and sexually abusing more than 300 children in Indonesia has died days after he attempted to kill himself, say police.

Francois Abello Camille, 65, could have faced life in prison, chemical castration or death by firing squad had he been found guilty of the alleged crimes against kids as young as 10.

The retiree was with two underage girls in a hotel room in Jakarta when he was arrested in June, said police.

He died in a Jakarta police hospital on Sunday night, three days after what police said on Monday was a suicide bid in his jail cell.

Abello, from the Paris area, was detained on charges of sexually abusing 305 minors, and was also accused of beating children who resisted his attempts to sexually abuse them.

Abello, 65, allegedly preyed on vulnerable street kids, it was reported.

He was found last Thursday unresponsive inside his cell at a detention centre in Jakarta, said police spokesman Yusri Yunus.

Mr Yunus added: "He had attempted suicide on Thursday, then after they (prison guards) found out, we tried to help him.

"He died last night."

A post-mortem has yet to be conducted.

The French Embassy in Jakarta declined to comment.

Although police confirmed Abello had a lawyer, they did not identify him.

Abello was arrested at a Jakarta hotel last month following complaints to police that he made sexual advances to underage women after paying to photograph them.

"When refused, he became violent, police said.

Police said he was charged with counts of sexual abuse and sex with minors and had confessed to the offences.

If found guilty, he would have faced life imprisonment, chemical castration or death under Indonesia's child protection laws.

Last Thursday, Abello was in handcuffs and wearing an orange prison shirt and black face mask - due to the coronavirus pandemic - as he was paraded in front of reporters at a press conference.

Abello, from France, could have been sentenced to death if convicted

He allegedly attempted within hours of the press conference.

Police allege they found videos on Abello's computer that showed him sexually abusing more than 300 children aged between 10 and 17.

The pensioner would allegedly approach children and lure them by claiming he needed models for a photo shoot.

Abello would take his victims to hotels in the capital, prepare them for nude photo shoots and then rape them, it is claimed.

He allegedly paid those "who agreed to have sex with him" between £14 and £55, said police.

He would attack those who tried to resist, it is alleged.

Abello had entered Indonesia on a tourist visa several times over the past five years, said police.

Jakarta police chief Nana Sudjana told reporters: "He would approach children and lure them by offering them work as models.

"The ones who agreed to have sex with him would get paid between 250,000 and one million rupiah (£14-£55).

"Those who didn't want to have sex would be beaten, slapped and kicked by the suspect."
