Names of those picked will be carried on the iconic fighter as it soars across the country, bearing the message “Thank U NHS” on its underwings.

The World War Two aircraft takes to the skies Sunday at 5pm to mark the NHS’s 72nd birthday and the Clap For Carers.

And for a minimum donation of £10 via, YOU can put forward a local hero to be among the 80,000 names.

The Spitfire will tour the nation this summer, spreading its message of hope.

Spitfire PL983, from Historic Flying at Duxford, Cambs, took to the skies to coincide with the final weekly NHS clap back in May.

John Romain, of the Aircraft Restoration Co, said: “The response to our initial flight was incredibly humbling, with hundreds of people sharing how wonderful it was to see the Spitfire.

"We decided to leave the message on the Spitfire for the rest of the flying season and began thinking of ways we could give something back to the NHS.

“This is where the idea to add the names while raising money for NHS Charities Together began.”

The plane was built for photo reconnaissance during World War Two, carrying cameras instead of weapons.

It was also flown and raced by groundbreaking pilot Lettice Curtis, one of the first women to fly with the Air Transport Auxiliary.

The plane will pass over communities and hospitals including London’s NHS Nightingale facility, with routes on the Aircraft Restoration Co’s website.

It will fly until September 20 before closing Duxford’s Battle Of Britain Air Show.

A show spokeswoman said: “In the Forties, Spitfire funds were set up to encourage a sense of purpose and hope.

“This Spitfire will once again embody the sense of freedom and togetherness it did then.”
