Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson believes Newcastle United will eye up a January transfer window swoop for Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard.

The Magpies are expected to splash the cash when the transfer window reopens after recently being takeover by a Saudi-led consortium.

Newcastle are now considered the wealthiest club in the Premier League and will be expected to invest heavily in their squad over time, starting in January, with new director Amanda Staveley having confirmed that the club will have ambitions to win the title in the future.

However, Newcastle's main priority, at this moment in time, is to stay afloat in the Premier League, with the club currently 19th in the table after their first seven games.

Nevertheless, Sky Sports pundit Merson believes that United ace Lingard is the type of player that Newcastle will be wanting to sign come the turn of the year, alongside Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.

Merson told Sky Sports : "The sort of players Newcastle will be in for in January are Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli.

"Good players, who will be better than what Newcastle have, but they can’t get into their own teams. What’s that going to win you? Nothing."

Lingard, who started England's 5-0 win over Andorra last weekend, has struggled to nail down a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans, failing to start in the Premier League so far this season, despite scoring in back-to-back games against both Newcastle United and West Ham United last month.

Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham and was a huge hit, scoring nine goals in 16 games. The Hammers wanted to sign him on a permanent basis but were unsuccessful in their efforts, with Solskjaer keen to retain his services.

The attacking midfielder's only start so far this season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham.
