Newcastle United and Leeds United have both had disappointing starts to the Premier League this season.
Both teams have failed to record a victory, suffered heavy defeats at Old Trafford, and are already hampered by injuries, adding pressure to this Friday’s clash at St James’ Park.
But how do the two sides compare? We gauged each team’s individual players by seeing how many from each side would feature in a combined XI chosen by you.
Readers could choose players from both teams, regardless of any injuries and suspensions, and the results are in.
Despite the growing gloom and doom on Tyneside, readers favoured Newcastle’s players, choosing six of Steve Bruce’s stable, compared to five of Marcelo Bielsa’s.
The formation most favoured was 4-3-3, with Newcastle’s currently injured goalkeeper Martin Dubravka chosen between the sticks ahead of Leed’s Illan Meslier. Perhaps things will feel brighter on Tyneside once Dubravka is back.
The back four featured three Leeds player - Junior Firpo, Diego Llorente and Luke Ayling. The only Newcastle defender chosen was Federico Fernandez, with no James Lascelles or Fabian Schar, suggesting a loss of confidence in even the first-choice Toon defenders.
In midfield, Kalvin Phillips was picked, as expected, having shown his star-power on the international stage for England this summer. Popular new signing Joe Willock was picked too. A slightly more surprising selection was Miguel Almiron.
There has been criticism of Almiron for being pushed off the ball too easily and for poor finishing, but his endless running and ability to get the ball forwards has made him enormously popular and thrilling to watch, which is no doubt why he was picked ahead of the likes of Daniel James and Mateusz Klich.
Newcastle-Leeds fans XI
Up front there are more surprises. There was no place for highly rated Spanish striker Rodrigo. Instead, readers chose the impressive Brazilian Raphina and two Newcastle forwards.
The first is Allan Saint-Maximin. No doubt Saint-Maximin could cause a lot of trouble in a team alongside some of the Leeds players, like Phillips and Raphina.
Readers also chose Callum Wilson, Newcastle’s number nine, in favour of recent England debutant Patrick Bamford.
Clearly readers rate the injured Newcastle forward highly, as they do goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. What Steve Bruce wouldn't give to have them back on the pitch for Friday night.
