A man was found badly injured and tied up on the side of a busy motorway naked, police have said.

Gardai have launched an investigation after the man was discovered alongside the M18 bypass near Athenry in Galway, Ireland.

The man is believed to have been found with numerous wounds and injuries following an assault, at around 8am on Monday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the man was taken to University Hospital Galway where he is currently being treated, reports the Irish Mirror.

Gardai confirmed they have launched an investigation into the incident and cannot comment further at this time.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Galway are investigating an incident involving a man who was found on a roadside in Athenry at approximately 8am on Monday October 19.

"The man has been hospitalised for a medical assessment.

"An investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time."

In other news this week, a New Zealand court heard that a man accused of killing his daughter was found naked with a pitchfork and blowing a whistle when police found him.

The dad, Aaron George Izett, 38, denies murdering Nevaeh Jahkaya Whatukura Ager in Little Waihi between March 20 and 21 in 2019.

The two-year-old's body was found tidal flats in Little Waihi in Maketū, New Zealand, but Izett denies murdering his daughter.

He also pleaded not guilty to three further charges - wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault and injuring with intent to injure.

The prosecution claim he was 'ranting and raving' and perhaps 'on meth' that day.
