Met Office warnings: Lightning storms, torrential rain and hail to lash UK in hours

BBC Weather: UK to be hit by stormy conditions as week progresses

The Met Office has issued thunderstorm warnings for swathes of the UK today, with torrential rain, slow-moving weather systems and lightning forecast to hit this afternoon. The UK has been hit by intense thunderstorms and heavy rain in recent days, with flooding wreaking havoc.

The forecasters warn: "Heavy showers already affecting the south and east of the Isle of Wight will become more widespread across the warning area through the afternoon, with some thunderstorms also developing.

"These may be quite slow-moving and last for an hour or two.

"Some torrential downpours are possible with a few places seeing 50 mm of rain or more within a few hours.

"Lightning and hail are also additional hazards."

Met Office thunderstorm warnings are in place for East of England, London and South East England, South West England, Wales, and the West Midlands.

The warnings last until 11pm tonight, with torrential downpours and lightning storms likely.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

The Met Office cautions drivers to be careful on roads, as spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

This comes after Storm Evert hit the UK, bringing fierce 69mph winds and heavy rain.

Guests at campsites across the southeast struggled to keep tents upright, with some sites relocating customers as the storm hit.

Now another storm could hit this week, with forecasters warning of a 400-mile wide weather system which could hit parts of the UK.

If named, this weather system could become Storm Fleur, and charts are forecasting winds of up to 60mph.
