Medway in Kent is now England's worst coronavirus hotspot, latest figures show.

In the seven days to Monday this week, 1,620 people in the area tested positive for Covid-19, sending the infection rate soaring.

Public Health England data shows Medway has a rate of 581.6 per 100,000 people, up from 449.5 the week before.

It has overtaken Swale, also in Kent, which has a rate of 567.7.

Ninth-placed Basildon, in Essex, is the worst-affected area which is currently in Tier 2.

But there is cause for optimism, with 250 of 315 local authority areas showing a fall in cases.

Two London boroughs, Redbridge and Havering, are in 11th and 13th place respectively amid warnings that the capital could be on the brink of going into Tier 3.

A drive-in Covid-19 testing facility set up in Rochester, Kent, which is in Medway

Professor Kevin Fenton, London’s director for Public Health England, pleaded with people to follow rules as figures show a fall in cases is levelling off.

He told The Standard: “The promising reductions we had begun to see with the recent national restrictions across the capital have shown signs of slowing in recent days - a stark reminder of just how delicate our situation is.

“As we make plans to go out this weekend, whether it’s shopping, eating out or meeting with friends outside, it is vital we remain vigilant and keep in mind that the virus is still present."

Experts warn London could go into Tier 3 if rates do not go down
Basildon in Essex has the highest infection rate of all the areas in Tier 2

Today the Department of Health confirmed a further 504 people had died within 28 days of contracting coronavirus - bringing the overall death toll to 60,617.

There were 16,298 confirmed new cases - with the weekly number of infections falling by 13%.

Nearly 15,000 people are in hospital with coronavirus, of which 1,261 are in ventilator beds.

Earlier today scientists confirmed that the UK's coronavirus R rate has fallen to between 0.8-1.0 ahead of next week's vaccine rollout.

Last week, the R rate stood was betweeb 0.9 and 1.0.

The UK's R number has fallen, scientists believe
