As Manchester United’s summer signings continue to settle at Old Trafford, focus behind-the-scenes has switched to potential January additions.

While the Reds have secured some impressive results in recent weeks, this season has shown the need for further investment in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Solskjaer will be relieved that international football has been put to bed until March, but with Premier League and Champions League games coming thick and fast, and the Carabao Cup and FA Cup set to add to their intense fixture schedule, one or two winter additions would not go amiss.

A few members of Solskjaer’s squad are also expected to leave in January in order to free up space in the squad for possible new arrivals.

Here are the latest Manchester United transfer rumours...

United to revive Dembele interest

Dembele continues to be linked with United

Manchester United will revive their interest in Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele in January, according to Mundo Deportivo.

United failed to land the Frenchman on loan in the summer but retain an interest in the 23-year-old, who may be sold by Barca to fund new arrivals at the Camp Nou.

Barca boss Ronald Koeman wants to sign a centre-back but the Catalan giants may be required to sell before they can buy as they grapple with the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A big-money signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, Dembele has scored 22 goals in 83 appearances for Barcelona.

United to seek competition for Wan-Bissaka

United will look to sign a right-sided defender over the next two windows to offer competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, according to ESPN.

The report states that while Wan-Bissaka’s defending has impressed United since his move from Crystal Palace in 2019, the club are keen to add a right-back who offers more in attack.

Wan-Bissaka has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best defenders in one-on-one situations, but his output in the final third leaves much to be desired with one goal and four assists in 42 league games for United.

United hope that bringing in an attack-minded right-back will aid the development of that department of Wan-Bissaka’s game.

The report also mentions United’s interest in signing a right winger with Solskjaer reportedly determined to strengthen that side of his team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance?

Gomes opens up on United exit

Angel Gomes has said a desire to play regular first-team football led to his Manchester United exit over the summer.

Gomes was released in June after rejecting a contract extension at Old Trafford and moved to Lille before being loaned out to Boavista, where he has starred this season with three goals and three assists in five Primeira Liga outings.

And during an interview with The Independent, the 20-year-old stressed how difficult it was leaving United but said he had to make a ‘sacrifice’ in order to progress his career.

“It’s such a special club but I just wanted to be able to play and express myself,” said Gomes.

“I was offered a great contract, I had all my family and friends around me, but I decided that I was willing to sacrifice that to pursue a different path.

"It’s hard to understand how difficult a decision that was. I’m still a United fan. I still watch every game now, whether it’s the first team or the U18s. I could have stayed and gone out on loan but it just felt like I needed a fresh start."
