Manchester United have made a shock enquiry for Chelsea star N'Golo Kante, according to reports.

With just over a week of the transfer window remaining, United are still trying to rescue their underwhelming summer of business by bringing in more new recruits by the October 5 deadline.

As a result, United have started to be linked with a wide range of players even though it's understood that Jadon Sancho is still the top target and a new left-back is also on the agenda, with Alex Telles and Vitaliy Mykolenko being monitored.

The latest player United have supposedly shown an interest in is defensive-midfielder Kante and, according to the Daily Mirror, via the The Sun, the club have reached out to the Frenchman's advisors to gauge his availability.

Chelsea have spent a massive £222.48million on improving their squad this summer and it's reported that they may look to recoup some of that expenditure by allowing Kante to leave, if they receive an acceptable offer.

The 29-year-old still has three-years on his contract so it would likely take a sizeable fee for Chelsea to let him leave and it's reported that United will only sign him if he takes a massive pay cut. Italian giants Inter have also been linked.

M.E.N. Sport understands that United aren't looking to sign another midfielder this summer following the arrival of Donny van de Beek and Kante isn't in the club's ideal age range for new signings.

Meanwhile, Roma will make one final attempt to sign Chris Smalling, according to Tuttosport, via SempreInter.

The centre-back enjoyed a fantastic season on loan at the Serie A side last season and has been keen to return to the Stadio Olimpico, but Roma have failed to meet United's valuation as of yet.

Inter are also believed to be interested in Smalling which will reportedly lead Roma to make one final bid this coming week before the window closes.
