Married At First Sight star Matthew Bennett has shared his regret of taking part in the show, despite it giving him the confidence to find love with new partner Bella.

Matthew was coupled up with Lauren Huntriss in season six of the Australian version of the series, but his hopes of a fairytale ending did not go to plan.

The contestant told Lorraine Kelly on Wednesday that he found the show "painful", and hasn't watched any of it back despite the odd clips in interviews.

Confessing he didn't consider it a real marriage, more something out of a soap opera, Matthew said he found the show "triggering" of his time taking part, and hasn't been able to watch it back despite it being one of the most talked about shows of all time in Australia and in the UK.

Speaking on Lorraine, he suggested based on his experience that the couples could be paired together for drama, rather than for love.

He also claimed the filming of his wedding took a number of takes, with different angles filmed and scenes reshot.

Speaking about whether he was honest on the show, after some awkward encounters ahead of his exit from the series, Matthew said he was naive.

He told Lorraine: "Honestly I was sincere in that I thought I might get matched with my perfect partner, and I might fall in love and it might be the fairytale ending I hoped for.

"But I think there was a lot of naivety that went with that decision as well."

Sharing his regrets, Matthew confessed he will never watch back his time on the show because he found it "triggering".

He said: "I can't, it's too triggering. No. There's some things that are just better left in the past."

Lorraine mentioned it was a TV show looking for entrainment as she questioned the pairing decision of Matthew and Lauren.

He replied: "I kind of have a theory that, and this was just my experience, but it feels like in some of the couples they match the polar opposites together and see what will happen, and that's where some of the drama sparks from."

Matthew has found love since with new girlfriend Bella

But he does believe his time on the show helped him find love outside of it, saying: "It was definitely like a trial by fire, I learned a lot and it was cos of those lessons that I got the confidence to approach Bella and we got a relationship out of that.

"The fact is had I not gone through that, cos the other thing about the show is that it showed me exactly what I didn't want and the values that were important to me, and what I was looking for in a person.

"So when I met Bella... it was a painful thing to go through but it was good in the long run."

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
