DARLINGTON FC player Luke Trotman has recalled the excruciating moment he heard a tendon “pop” and he had to be stretchered off the pitch.
The Achilles tendon injury means he is out for the rest of the season – and the 22-year-old's using his time wisely as he will be gracing our TV screens on Love Island.
Describing the moment on pitch last August which led to him ending up on the show, he told The Northern Echo: “I just went up for a header and when I landed I heard it pop.
"I just rolled off the pitch, I didn’t make a big deal and stop the game. Having broken my leg before I think the nerves there are a bit dull, so it didn’t hurt that much. All the lads were saying I might be alright, but Danny (the physio) knew straight away. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t lift my foot up.
"I was fine in the changing room, but as soon as I got to Danny’s car I burst out crying! He’s funny, Danny, and he looked after me."
He was operated on shortly after the injury and was told it would be at least seven to nine months before he was back playing.
His team is fully supporting his decision to go on the show, saying: “The possibility of Luke appearing on Love Island was discussed by Luke and club representatives, and he is doing rehab on the island under physio instruction.
“He has also gym access and a programme to continue rehab.”
Luke, who is from Luton and is also in his final year of a banking, finance and management degree at Loughborogh Uni, is a hugely popular and valued member of the squad.
He won the player’s player of the year in 2018 and he has been called up to England C squad.
Before entering the villa Luke admitted he has his eye on Leanne Amaning, Siannise Fudge, Sophie and Rebecca.
