Officers remain at the scene this morning (December 5) to canvass for witnesses and CCTV footage.

Local resident Adam Patel, of Blackpool Road, told LancsLive that around eight police cars and one ambulance had descended on the scene at around 8.45pm and a stretch of the road was sealed off.

The 48 year old said: "Somebody walking past said that somebody was stabbed.

"Somebody heard a girl screaming."

A staff member at Texaco, who did not wish to be named, said: "Some boys came in here and they were asking to ring an ambulance. I was not here myself but it happened at about 8.30pm last night."

"It's not a common occurrence around here- it's normally quite a quiet, peaceful area, with good people."

Stagecoach were forced to divert the 1 and 1a bus services while the closure was in place.
