Kris Marshall claims he left Death In Paradise after four years because his son was ‘becoming too Caribbean’

KRIS Marshall has claimed he left Death In Paradise after four years because his son was ‘becoming too Caribbean’.

The 47-year-old actor played lead detective DI Humphrey Goodman in the hit BBC series from 2013 to 2017.

The show is filmed on the island of Guadeloupe and Kris took wife Hannah and children Thomas and Elsie with him each season for the long months of filming.

But speaking to Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show, Kris revealed: "Well the thing is, after doing four great years on Guadeloupe, the island where we filmed Death in Paradise, I realised I really had to get my son to school."

He added: "He was becoming a bit too Caribbean… He refused to wear shoes, he would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple.

"He was very good on the beach but not so good with maths and English.

"I decided it was time to get him back to school, so the show had to go.

"Six months later, I’m standing on a film set in a car park in Dagenham at 4am, thinking, 'Have I made the right decision?'"

However, Kris' comments left some viewers confused, with one writing on Twitter: "Did #krismarshall just say his son was becoming too Caribbean and then just reel off a bunch of stereotypes about eating pineapple and not wearing shoes? #gmb #readthetone."

Another viewer replied: "Yeah I believe he did I won’t lie, thought that was really weird. I was just sat there the whole time like [awkward emoji]."

They added: "I’m sure he didn’t mean anything by it at all but I did cringe for him just a little bit. Like 'oh no stop, stop talking'."

Kris confirmed his departure from the show in 2017 and was replaced by Ardal O'Hanlon for series 6-9.

Ralf Little then took over as the lead detective during series nine and will return for series 10.
