Kate and William to be in firing line during Meghan and Harry interview – expert's warning

Meghan Markle and Harry: Andrew Neil 'won't watch interview'

Meghan and Prince Harry's two-hour-long interview with Oprah will touch upon their relationship with the Royal Family, according to royal commentator Patricia Treble. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William, in particular, are going to be at the centre of Oprah's grilling following reports of a feud between the royal brothers, the Canadian expert added.

Asked what topic she thinks may make the royals "a little nervous", Ms Treble told Global News' The Morning Show: "Oprah is the sort of interviewer who is... you are very relaxed, she is like your mum or grandma, but she gets the answers she is looking for.

"And she is going to be looking for specific answers regarding the relationship with the Royal Family - and regarding Harry, this is Harry's family.

"And I think that's probably what has the Royal Family, what has their staff most concerned.

"They are going to be talking about their relationship with Charles, their relationship with Camilla, with the Queen, with Prince Philip - especially with William and Kate."

Ms Treble noted there have been rumours of a rift between Prince William and Prince Harry circulating for several months.

She added: "And so how much details they go into, how much detail Oprah can get out of them, that is going to be what so fascinating, and that's something that has simply never happened before."

Rumours of a rift between the Cambridges and the Sussexes started swirling in late 2018, after Meghan and Harry announced their decision to move out of their home on the grounds of Kensington Palace to relocate to Windsor.

A few months later, the couple also created an office independent from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and left the Royal Foundation, the Sussexes and Cambridges' charity organisation, to launch their own.

While it was initially believed there had been a clash between the Duchesses, insiders later claimed the rift was between the brothers.

In October 2019, during the Sussexes' tour to South Africa, Prince Harry was asked by broadcaster Tom Bradby about the rumoured rift.

He replied: “Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under.

“Inevitably, you know, stuff happens. But we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers.

“We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.

“We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we are so busy.

“But I love him dearly. And you know the majority of stuff is created out of nothing.

“But as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days.”

The relationship between the Dukes is thought to have been exacerbated by Harry and Meghan's decision to relinquish their full-time working roles in the Firm in January 2020.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl claimed Prince William was so upset with Prince Harry in the wake of his bombshell announcement on Megxit that he could not bring himself to have lunch with his brother, grandmother and father ahead of the summit in Sandringham.

Tensions between the brothers appeared high also on Commonwealth Day, when both the Sussexes and the Cambridges were spotted barely greeting each other.

But, Ms Nicholl said earlier this year, the couples manage to mend their relationship throughout 2020 and were in touch over Christmas.

She said: "There were phone and video calls over the Christmas and New Year holiday and the Sussexes sent presents to the Cambridges and vice versa.

"It was an opportunity in an otherwise very busy and chaotic year for both of the families to come together and connect, albeit virtually.

"Things are a lot better between William and Harry. If you go back a year at that stage, these brothers were barely on talking terms.”

Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah will air on Sunday at 8pm ET (Monday at 1am GMT) in the US.

In a clip released by CBS, the journalist said: I just want to make it clear to everybody there is no subject that's off-limits.”
