Jermain Defoe last night revealed he’s ready to commit his future to Rangers in January.

The 37-year-old striker has already had talks with Steven Gerrard about stretching his stay at Ibrox beyond his current loan spell.

Now he admits he wants it done as soon as his deal with Bournemouth, which ends in June, allows him to pen a pre-contract.

Gers have already extended the contract of fellow veterans Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, but Defoe - who scored his 14th of the season in Friday night’s win over Hibs - said: “I’m still on loan so my situation is different to theirs.

“But hopefully it will be sorted and I can enjoy this season and we can achieve something special together and then I can look forward to next season.

“It’s a special club to play for.

“Since I’ve been here, I’ve not thought about going anywhere else. It’s a massive club.

“Obviously the manager and those at the club have made it clear that they want me to stay. From day one, the appreciation from the fans and the people around the training ground and at the club since I’ve been here has been amazing.

“I’ve only been here a short time and it’s a nice feeling for myself and my family.”

The size of Defoe’s deal at Bournemouth prevented the Ibrox side making a permanent move for the frontman in the first place.

But the 57-cap striker was quick to point out that his negotiations are about more than just money.

He said: “At this stage of my career, it’s about football and as you can see I love it here.

“I have always been a player who lets the agents do all that stuff, though, as I just want to focus on my football and not get too much involved in that side.”

Gerrard will give his players a few days’ break following the clash with Celtic next Sunday before flying out with the squad for a winter camp in Dubai.

And he’s hopeful Defoe can be tied up by then.

He said: “We have already sat down with Jermain. He knows exactly what we want, he knows the offer. We just have to obviously respect Bournemouth but when the time is right and Jermaine is ready, we are ready.”
