The couple - who share two children - have been Mr and Mrs Smith for 24 years after tying the knot on December 31 1997.

The pair became three when they welcomed son Jaden in 1998 and then their family grew to four when they had daughter Willow in 2000.

During a new bombshell interview with GQ Will handed over a transcript for a book he is penning on his life where he delved into the details of his and wife Jada's choice of shaking up their marriage after they came to the decision that their union "can’t be a prison."

Will detailed in the musings how after spending three years planning a party for Jada in Santa Fe - which included him screening a documentary he had commissioned that chronicled her life and traced her family’s lineage back to slavery - that when they went back to their hotel and had a fiery row.

The two began shouting and daughter Willow, who was 10 at the time, was crying and asking them to stop.

"Our marriage wasn’t working," Smith writes.

"We could no longer pretend. We were both miserable and clearly, something had to change."

After reaching the breaking point the couple then made the decision to allow extra-marital relations within their marriage - but it is not clear if this is still the case.

Will has confessed that he and Jada have a non-monogamous romance

Will even told that he had dreams of starting a harem of girlfriends - including Halle Berry - after meeting with intimacy coach Michaela Boehm but which he says "seemed like a great idea" until realising "that would be horrific."

It is not the first time that Will has delved into his marriage with Jada.

In 2020 he appeared on her Facebook show after rapper August shared claims he and Jada had a years-long affair with the blessing of her husband.

During the discussion, Jada referred to her relationship with August as an "entanglement."

Jada explained face-to-face on camera to her husband how being with August made her feel "joy."

Mother of two Jade embarked on the whirlwind romance for four and a half years with August - after meeting him through her son Jaden.

The husband and wife denied that Will gave his blessing to the extra-marital relationship.

During the Red Table Talk chat, Jada clarified that her husband didn't have to give the new love rival permission because they were over - almost "indefinitely".

She said: "As time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement [with August]. You giving permission only circumstance is myself.

"August was probably trying to communicate, I could see how he would perceive it as permission as we were separated amicably. He wanted to make it clear he's not a home wrecker. Which he's not."

Jada poured out her heartbreak over her split from Will as she grieved what she thought was the end of their marriage while she romanced August.

The actress detailed that she was "in a lot of pain" and "broken" as her marriage crumbled.

She said: "I was in a lot of pain. I was broken."

Jada added: "I wanted to feel good. It had been so long since I felt good. It was really a joy to just help heal somebody."

After the unexpected insight into the affair, sources said the pair feel that this "wouldn't even be a story" if they weren't a high profile couple and that coming clean was the "best move for their family."

A source told Us Weekly : "They are a very vulnerable and open pair, and they felt this was the best move for their family."

The insider added: "This wouldn't even be a story if they weren't famous – it’s a normal situation – break up, get back together."
