DEAR DEIDRE: I LOOKED for love on a dating website but found someone who wanted to fleece me.
He said he was in the US army and back home on leave after a tour in Syria. He asked me all about myself, and soon we were messaging daily.

We swapped pictures of each other and he looked really fit. I’m 33 and he said he was 31.
He said he wanted to come over here to visit while on leave. I was excited and planned to take him sightseeing.
But a week before he was due to come he said he had a temporary problem releasing money.
He asked me to send him £800 to pay for his ticket. I may be romantic but told him I was not born yesterday.
I reported him to the website so other women wouldn’t get scammed, but I see his profile is still up there for anyone to contact.
DEIDRE SAYS: It seems a classic scam and I’m glad you didn’t fall for it.
Get in touch with the site again and say you’ll be reporting it to Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040).
The web is great for meeting people but there are fraudsters, so never send money to strangers.
