Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson has admitted that he hates the fame that comes with being a well-known soap star.
The 47-year-old is currently starring on this year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! alongside fellow soap actors Adam Woodyatt and Danny Miller.
During Tuesday's episode of the ITV show, Simon was heard chatting about his career after campmate Frankie Bridge asked him: "Are you still in Corrie?"
"Yeah. 32 years [I’ve been on it]," Simon replied, as Frankie then probed: "Do you never think, I want to do other characters and other things?"
"No. I’ve never done anything but play Steve. It’s the only thing I’ve ever done. I wanted to join the military or race cars," Simon said.
He then explained how he actually landed the role of Steve McDonald on the ITV soap.
"I was 15 when I started filming. 14 when I got the job," he explained.
"And we were sat in assembly and they said there were people here from TV. Which in 1989 was like, 'Oh my god! No way!' I was like, ‘I’m going to check this out'."
Speaking about how he dealt with being on one of the most-watched shows in the UK, Simon admitted: "It was difficult for a while to adjust. This isn’t what I planned for myself and I do not like it. I hated it. The fame side of it I hated it. I still don’t."
Chatting later on in the In the Telegraph, Simon told the camera: "If things had been different I could have been driving tanks or racing cars."
Instead, Simon has been a part of some of the biggest storylines on the cobbles and has won a few wards including the British Soap Award for Best Comedy Performance.
I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! airs at 9pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
