Motherwell's Jake Carroll admits he's loving in life in Scotland after penning a new contract at Fir Park.

The 29 year-old has extended his stay in Lanarkshire until 2023 after agreeing a new contract at the club where he has became a respected part of the squad.

Carroll previously enjoyed a loan spell at Partick Thistle in 2014-15 and he believes he's so fond of Scotland because it reminds him of home in Dublin.

He said: “I’ve played up here before and enjoyed it. I thought it might go the same way and luckily it has because I’ve really enjoyed it.

“I like the Scottish culture, the Scottish people and football - I think it’s brilliant. Being from Dublin, the people here are similar - same humour, laid back and like to have fun.

"When you move to this club there are lads passing on numbers to help you with moving or looking after your dog. Now, I’ve found myself as the guy passing out numbers.”

The Irishman has recently returned from a 10 month spell out injured after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Carroll revealed it was difficult to be on the sidelines but is enjoying working with new manager Graham Alexander.

He explained: "You get some dark days in the gym and you have to set goals. One of my targets was to sign a new contract here and I’ve managed to do it.

“I’m delighted. We’ve been speaking for a couple of weeks now and I’m happy here. I’m happy with the new manager and coaching staff and with everyone around the club really.

“It’s a boost when a new manager comes into a club, you are excited to see how he works and he’s excited to see new boys. It’s the excitement of a new face coming in and we’ve enjoyed the training.

“That always happens subconsciously {raising your game}. It’s a fresh start for some people who didn’t get a chance under the last manager. The lads who’ve been in the team want to stay in the team and they’ve got to prove that as well."

Carroll will be part of Alexander's squad travelling north to face Aberdeen this weekend. The Steelmen have a good recent record at Pittodrie winning on their last two visits.

Carroll missed the 3-0 win in September through injury but played in the 1-0 win last season but he is expecting a really difficult match.

He said: “They’re a very good side especially at their place. We’ve shown that we’re capable of going there and getting a result in the past. I wasn’t part of the game earlier in the season but we looked really, really good.

"Last season, we took three points away at their place and we will be looking to do the same again this time.”
