Rutherglen Tennis Club on Monday presented the 100-year-old Burnside Tennis Club Gents’ Singles Cup as part of their 2021 club championship, while tribute was also paid to a former player.

The club was presented with the cup by a former winner, which has been modified and renamed RLTC Gents’ Singles Championship Trophy, which was on Monday presented to winner Ross Young.

Flora McCormack’s huge contribution to the club was also recognised, after she sadly passed away earlier this year, as the club bought a new ladies’ singles cup and named it the Flora McCormack Memorial Trophy.

Her daughter Brenda presented the trophy to ladies’ singles winner Rebecca Bonomi, and she also presented the gents’ cup.

Committee member Peter Mulholland said: “Just before the start of lockdown, the old Burnside Tennis Club Gents Singles Cup was handed in to us by a very kind former winner.

“Having now taken over the Burnside Courts, we wanted to retain and protect this beautiful 100-year-old trophy so that it can be enjoyed and cherished by future generations.

“It’s been nicely restored and a larger base made to accommodate another band for many more winners’ names to be engraved.

“We’ve renamed it the RLTC Gents Singles Championship Trophy and were proud to present it for the first time on Monday.”

Peter added: “Flora made a huge contribution to our club in so many ways. The fact that our club is still here and doing so well is down in no small part to Flora’s efforts.

“To recognise everything she’s done for the club and to commemorate and celebrate her legacy, we’ve bought a beautiful new ladies’ singles cup and named it the Flora McCormack Memorial Trophy.
