Perspective homeowners will usually visit a property multiple times and turn to the opinion of experts before finalising the purchase to ensure what they're paying for is the real deal.

Splashing out on a home only to find problems once the keys have been handed over is a nightmare for any buyer, but one family found their new house actually came with an additional space they didn't spot until after they moved in.

The house features a solid wooden staircase that looks nothing out of the ordinary until you notice the top stair has a small gap spanning its width.

When they investigated it further, they found it acted as a hinge, with the entire staircase lifting up to reveal a secret room hidden underneath the property.

Stairs lead downwards to a hidden room

It exposes a second flight of stairs heading downwards, as one of the people who now lives there explained it leads to another room, where they found antiques, 10 bottles of wine from the 1960s and 70s, old pieces of wood, and piping.

The picture went viral after being shared to the Mildly Interesting page on Reddit, captioned: "The new house my parents bought has a secret room hidden under the stairs."

Some were having nothing to do with the 'creepy' room and compared it to a scene from the film Parasite, as one said: "Nope. F*** that. I’ve seen that movie", while another wrote: "That's not mildly interesting, it's enormously creepy."

A third asked: "So, did you find Harry Potter?"

Another commented: "That's where they put little boys and girls who don't eat their vegetables."

And someone else replied: "All these people saying it looks scary and I'm just thinking how it would make a great wine cellar."
