Great British Bake Off queen Nancy Birtwhistle has announced the launch of a new book as a follow on to her last Sunday Times best-selling work.

Nancy, who comes from Hull and now lives in Barton upon Humber, claimed the GBBO title in 2014 and has since been ranked in the top ten most successful ever contestants to grace the famous baking tent.

She appeared on TV with Kirstie Allsopp, sharing her quick and easy Christmas food ideas, last year, and has just been in front of the cameras again, on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, telling viewers about her “naughty but nice” deep-filled mince pies.

Nancy turned from baking to writing when she published her debut cookery and household hints book, Sizzle and Drizzle, which was a sell-out in 2019, and then wrote Clean & Green, providing hints and tips for a more eco-friendly home, last year.

Now she is bringing out Green Living Made Easy, a book she describes as a “massive lifestyle manual”.

“Clean & Green came out last January and was a Sunday Times top ten best-seller,” said Nancy.

“They asked me to write another book and rather than just being about cleaning, this one has a bit of everything in it.

“There’s stuff on growing your own food, cooking your own food, baking, upcycling and crafts, and some cleaning, and basically saving some money.

“There are tips like turning your oven off ten minutes before the cooking time finishes, and if you have more than one ring on, on your hob, it’s cheaper to put the oven on.”

Nancy thinks the book will appeal to a wide audience, from young people who are already environmentally conscious and climate-aware and want to do their bit, to older people wanting to “make the switch” to greener living, to young mums looking for inspiration across different areas of family life.

“It’s not something that’s been cobbled together in a few months, it’s a lifetime’s work for me, these are things I have been doing for many, many years and I’ve brought them into the 21st century,” said Nancy.

“It’s been a lot of hard work but I’ve enjoyed putting it together.”

Nancy said 60 per cent of her followers – she has more than 100,000 on Instagram – are in the US and that Clean & Green was Pan Macmillan’s biggest-selling book for the first half of 2020 across the pond.

“I don’t know if Green Living will be popular there as well but I do think it’s for a wide range of people.”

As for what’s next for Nancy, she said: “I am having chats with lots of people but that’s all I can say at the moment.”

Green Living Made Easy is due out in hardback on March 3, 2022, with pre-orders being taken now.
