Grant McCann remains one of the bookmakers favourite to succeed Alex Neil as the next Preston North End manager.

The Lilywhites are on the hunt for a new boss  after parting ways with Neil following a 0-1 home defeat to Luton Town, leaving PNE 16th in the Championship after just three wins in 2021.

Joey Barton emerged as a surprise frontrunner for the job, despite only being in charge of League One outfit Bristol Rovers for six weeks, but it's links with Hull City's McCann that have persisted over recent weeks.

McCann, though, was in no mood to engage with questions about his future ahead of their clash with Gillingham at the KCOM Stadium, declaring himself very happy with the promotion hunting Tigers on a contract which runs until next summer.

He and Barton are not the only League One managerial candidates for the North End vacancy, however. Plymouth Argyle's Ryan Lowe is another to be profiled, having taken the Pilgrims to within seven points of a play-off position despite a recent drop in form.

Nicky Butt still features on the list, along with Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth and Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton. North End are understood to have received over 50 applications for the job as their new manager.
