TV presenter Gethin Jones says he's received marriage offers after surprising fans last month when he posted an Instagram snap of him wearing a gold wedding band.

Social media went crazy following his post in which he mentioned his "big day".

And many celebrities rushed to congratulate him, including Vernon Kay, Gaby Roslin and Charlotte Hawkins.

But is later transpired that the Cardiff-born BBC host was, in fact, still single and had been recording a new ad for Welsh jeweller Clogau.

“I should sometimes think more about social media!” said 42-year-old Gethin in an exclusive interview with the Mirror.

“I didn’t mean it! I had tagged the jewellers in and then I turned my phone off to do some filming. By the time I got back, there was a story saying I had got married!

“A couple of my closest friends called me that night. One is a schoolteacher and said to another of our friends: ‘did you know Gethin has got married?’ and they replied: ‘don’t be silly. As if’!

“It was just mad and really funny! I am still very much single!

"I did get a few marriage offers afterwards when people found out I wasn’t. DM’s were sliding in frantically!”

Perhaps the fact Gethin has talked publicly about being single is the reason why it caught so many on the hop. Alex Jones even blurted out live on The One Show recently that he was going on a date.

“I know, thanks for that,” he laughed. “I am single but tell me how you are supposed to date during lockdown?!"

Gethin, once engaged to Katherine Jenkins, confides his friends have done ‘their fair share of match making’.

“But I am not a serial dater or anything like that. Maybe when lockdown is over, I can do speed dating for weeks on end!”

Gethin, a former Blue Peter presenter and Strictly Come Dancing contestant, is now preparing to front the BBC's new daily live morning show, alongside Kym Marsh, that will run against ITV’s Lorraine at 9.15am.

With Alex Jones on The One Show

A spin off of The One Show, it will combine many of the best bits of the BBC’s hit 7pm magazine show with its own unique morning take. Guest experts from some of the BBC’s other staple daytime programmes, like Ready Steady Cook and The Repair Shop, will also be on hand to offer their tips.

“I don’t ever expect anything in this industry but The One show has had such a presence in lockdown and I think to have a programme in the morning too, reflecting on the mood of the nation is great,” said Gethin.

He has certainly had plenty of practice for his new morning gig, working as a regular presenter on The One Show with Alex over the last few months – something he cherishes especially as they have been friends for 20 years.

“I feel like it is danger every day because Alex and I gossip so much in make-up!” said Gethin. “I think we sometimes forget about what we are not supposed to gossip about! She is a dream to work with.

“We have been friends for 20 years now as I got my first job in TV on a show with Alex on my 24th birthday with her wearing double denim!”

After being forced to pull out of Masterchef earlier this year amid fears he had Covid, Gethin is also once again a roving reporter on BBC2’s It Takes Two.

“It is nice to have Strictly on again at the moment and it will be nice to argue about toe leads and waltzes."

Gethin had to pull out of Masterchef

“I am very fortunate and Morning Live couldn’t have come at a better time. My mum and dad are shielding in Wales, my sister works in a hospital Covid ward and she also has the challenges of two children. One of my nephews, Alby, has autism. It is really difficult as I would love to be able to take the shopping over and help my sister out but I can’t really. She is the proper hero anyway in my eyes.”

BBC1’s Morning Live starts on Monday, October 26 at 9.15am and runs every weekday until Christmas
