I reckon WORDSWORTH (3.05 Ascot) will be poetry in motion in the Queen's Vase.

Aidan O'Brien's promising young colt broke his maiden in emphatic style two starts ago.

And he looked to still be learning on the job when just touched off by a stablemate in Listed company last time, with the pair pulling clear.

Royal Ascot special 🏇🎩

He had been quietly fancied for the Derby up until that point, but O'Brien clearly felt the hustle and bustle of Epsom might be too much too soon for Wordsworth at this stage of his career.

He is bred to excel with time and distance, being a brother to top-class stayer Kew Gardens, so this 1m6f trip will be right up his street.

The fact he got into a scrap last time out will stand him in good stead here, and he appeals as the type to take a huge step forward on this fast ground in a race the yard have dominated over the years.

It could be a day for the fancied runners on Wednesday, as LADY BOWTHORPE (3.40 Ascot) will be very hard to beat.

She has always been held in high regard by her trainer William Jarvis, and she delivered in fine style over C&D in a Group 3 last summer.

She stepped up again on her reappearance at Newmarket earlier this year when a game winner of the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes, before a brilliant second to Palace Pier in the Lockinge.

She sees out a mile strongly, so she will need a good pace to aim at here under her penalty, but the likes of Fooraat and Parent's Prayer should ensure a decent tempo.

The likes of Queen Power and Lavender's Blue were flattered to get as close to the selection at Newmarket as they did, and on all known form she should be very hard to beat.

Royal Ascot day two selections (advised odds correct at time of writing)

WEDNESDAY

3.05 Royal Ascot - Wordsworth 2pts WIN @ 3-1

3.40 Royal Ascot - Lady Bowthorpe 2pts WIN @ 2-1

5.00 Royal Ascot - Matthew Flinders 1pt EW @ 12-1

The Royal Hunt Cup is one of the big betting races of the week, and I've long felt MATTHEW FLINDERS (5.00 Ascot) is the ideal type for this sort of race.

He's a strong traveller who sees out a mile strongly, and he has amassed some rock-solid handicap form over the last couple of years.

He was a fine third in the Spring Cup at Newbury first-time-out, when a lack of match sharpness just told in the closing stages, and you can put a line through his defeat at York where he was stuck wide and keen early.

If you could hand pick his ideal conditions it would be a big field over the stiff, straight mile at Ascot on quick ground, and champion jockey Oisin Murphy will be able to get plenty of cover and smuggle him into the race.

I'm confident he is capable of bagging a big one, and today could be the day.
