A FIRE broke out at Yorkshire Water's sewage works last night.

Firefighters from Rawdon, Shipley, Stanningley, Bradford and Fairweather Green, were called to the site, on Ainsbury Avenue, Esholt at around 9.45pm.

A conveyor belt and machinery were on fire inside the sewage works building.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear and a fire investigator is due to go back to the scene today.

Firefighters used a large jet at the scene and were there for around four hours.

Watch Commander John Senior, of Shipley fire station, said the site is still able to function as other things are in place, but the fire "caused quite a bit of damage".

He described it as a "complex piece of machinery" which covers a large area.

Nobody was injured.
