TV presenter Fern Britton has spoken for the first time about the break-up of her 20 year marriage to TV chef Phil Vickery.

Their shock split after a fairy tale romance and a happy two decades together was followed by a move to Cornwall for Fern, now 62, where she is currently in lockdown with daughters Grace (from her first marriage to TV executive Clive Jones) and 18-year-old Winnie, whose dad is Phil.

Of their break-up last year Fern said: “I know I’ve hurt people but people have hurt me too.

“We had a wonderful time. We were the best of friends. And I miss that friendship.

“But there comes a point when the children are substantially off your hands and you look at each other and wonder where you’re going to go from here.”

Fern and former husband Phil Vickery met in the late 90s on the set of This Morning

Speaking in Weekend magazine yesterday, the mum-of-four wouldn’t be drawn on whether she still speaks to Phil who she met in the late 90s on the set of This Morning where she was the main presenter alongside Phillip Schofield and Vickery was the show’s resident chef.

And after two failed marriages she says she is not looking for husband number three.

“I really did try to build good families but it didn’t work out. I won’t try again” she said.

“I don’t want anyone. I can do it by myself. I don’t feel lonely. I like my own company.

“I realised not long ago that I was married, on and off, for 33 years. Now I find myself joining the army of silver splitters and I’m really looking forward to the next 20 years.

Fern said of former 'TV husband' Philip Schofield on the breakdown of his own marriage after he came out as gay:'My immediate thoughts were for his lovely family'

“I took a long time to make my decision yet I have faith that its going to be alright. Now I;m looking forward to the last third of my adult life.

“An uncertain future doesn't panic me. I feel liberated. I’m turning into a recluse and I’m loving it.”

Fern also talked about the break-up of her former on-screen “husband’ Phillip Schofield, whose own long marriage recently broke down when he came out as gay.
Fern said: “My immediate thoughts were for his lovely family. It must have been tough. My heart goes out to them.”
